English 12 B Tri 3 Exam Essay

The goals that I chose for myself to reach this trimester were to read more, write more often, and lengthen my writing. In every English class, I have had I didn’t really like it because it wasn’t really my thing since I wasn’t good at reading or writing but my teachers over the years have helped me expand my reading and writing so it got easier. Now that I have had a whole 2 years to reflect on what I have been doing in English classes I realize that yes it did suck at some points but it wasn’t bad. All the reading and writing that Andy made us do help because it taught me how to keep a book and finish it. Normally I just read a couple of pages and drop the book and then when it comes time to write about what we read in class I just put down a bunch of random things that didn’t make sense and then I would just leave it at that and then wouldn’t care what I got for a grade. This year I finished a whole book in class and one out of class and then when it came time to write about what we were reading about I knew what to write instead of putting a bunch of random things down that didn’t make any sense. I told myself that I wanted to lengthen my writing because I didn’t like writing at all and would just write short paragraphs in my other English classes. Before I said that the only writing that I did was on my phone. Now in Andy’s class, I am doing creative writings everyday help because I didn’t write that much and at the beginning of the trimester I didn’t write that much during the creative writings, but towards the middle and end of the trimester, I got used to writing I felt comfortable about writing and I just would write and tell a whole story where before I would be so tense and wouldn’t want to write so I would just write a couple of sentences. So did I meet these goals? I would most definitely say that before I would never read a book and now I am starting to read more books not just in school but out of school too. I definitely met my writing goals. I write almost every day now in Andy’s class and I’m not just writing small paragraphs I am writing a lot bigger paragraphs.

My blog post The Time I Shot My Deer was my best blog post I’d say.  Why do I think it’s my best one yet? Because I told a whole story of mine without stopping because I thought it was too embarrassing or it was stupid. I put all my stress and emotions aside and just wrote. That’s what I think I improved the most was just putting all things aside and just writing. Before I wouldn’t write at all and if I did it would have been very short and sweet. This class has taught me to just let loose and do what I felt was right. So yes I think that The Time I Shot My Deer was my best blog post because I just let loose and told my whole story about me shooting a deer. That was the blog post that stood out the most to me because I wrote the most compared to all of the other blog posts that I had written in the past.

I think I put most of my efforts into my creative writings. The impact it had on me was huge in my opinion because I never wrote before and these showed me that it was ok to write in here and open up about things. It definitely taught me to proofread my writings because before I would just write something and then turn it in. When I would get my writings back from my teacher Andy they would just be filled with comments saying that I had to fix this and that. So everything I turned in I got through and proofread everything that I did. I was trying to go through them and make sure that my stuff was right so I didn’t have much work when I had to go back and fix some things. Proofreading is good because I will use it when it comes to writing things for work or college.

Which intellectual risk seemed to have the richest reward?  I would have to say the reading that I was doing in class. I read two books and those help me a lot. When I read those books I had something to write about for my writings in class. How did it shift your approach? This shifted my approach about picking a book in school and out of school and reading it. It showed that books aren’t always bad and that it doesn’t hurt to pick one up once in a while and read it. Ever since I have been reading I have been able to lengthen my writing more so I have something to talk about, where before when we were doing writings about the books we read I would just drag on about something random because I didn’t know what I was talking about because I didn’t read any books that I was supposed to read, but now that I read all the books though I go back and write about things that I need to write about.

What do I think I am adding to my overall literacy repertoire? I think I am adding way more reading and writing. I write every other day in English class and out of school I sometimes write too. I also have been reading more and more in and outside of school. At the beginning of the year, I didn’t read or write that much. If it wasn’t on my phone then I wouldn’t care. Now that it’s at the end of the trimester It has opened my eyes to reading and writing more and more and that it can help you especially for college or work. I didn’t realize how much information that books can have and that not all information comes off your phone. So yes I would most definitely say that I have added a ton more reading and writing to my literacy.

Blog Post #4

This school year I have been reading the book, Hugo. Last trimester I had read 459 pages out of the book. It is a big book and I’m not the fastest of readers. I am also one who only really read in my spare time which isn’t a whole lot. This trimester I read a little bit and now I am on page 500. I plan on finishing this book very soon, I am almost done with it. I also read the book “Alone Together” in class and out of school and that was 240 pages so that took up some time of mine so i wasn’t able to read my regular book as much.

Like I said last trimester I love this book because of all the pictures and you can see all the great detail in the pictures. I also love how the book goes by quickly you would think it wouldn’t since it is a big book but you fly through it. You read a couple pages then flip through a bunch of detailed pictures that also tells the story for you that you don’t have to read as much and that’s why I pick up this book because reading isn’t my favorite subject in the world. I also really liked reading the book “Alone Together” because it wasn’t a book just crammed full of words and it was a shorter book so i flew through the book with ease and enjoyed it.

I get most of my reading done here at home, but when I am in English class I pick up a different book and try to read some of the comic books also. Other than at home and at school, I don’t do a whole lot of reading. My goal for the last trimester was to finish the book but then I started reading “Alone Together” in class. I still have that goal of finishing my book and I hope to meet that goal before the year is up.

I learned this trimester that you have to push through all the distractions. Normally if I had too many distractions I would just quit reading but I learned you need to push through those distractions and also try and set yourself up for success so try and pick a room or a place where there will be no distractions so it is a better place for you to read. This helped me a lot because I knew I would need to read my book and get it done for class so I buckled down and kept reading through the distractions and that’s when I learned you it’s better if you just sit in a place with the least distractions.

This trimester I have been reading the book, Alone together It is about Sadie Carter and he life growing up as kid. The author wanted us to know how hard it was for her to growing up and what struggles she had to overcome. This trimester I managed to read the whole book which was 240 pages. It was a smaller book and I’m not the fastest of readers but I did finish it. I am also one who only really reads in my spare time which isn’t a whole lot but I have lots of class time to read this book which was very helpful. This trimester I read this book because this is all I had time for. I plan on finishing my other book “Hugo” very soon, I am almost done with it.

what surprised me in this book because I could relate to some of the things that were going on with this character in the book. I also love how the book goes by quickly. The author Sarah J. Donovan wanted us to know was struggler her and her family had. Sadie Carter changed a lot in this book and she overcame things on her own. I noticed how much Sadie Carter grew as a person. I flew through this book since it was small and Also because I had a lot of class time to read . You read a couple pages and the pages are very short so the book was very easy and fun to read especially for me because reading isn’t my favorite subject.

I learned this trimester that you have to push through all the distractions. Normally if I had too many distractions I would just quit reading but I learned you need to push through those distractions and also try and set yourself up for success so try and pick a room or a place where there will be no distractions so it is a better place for you to read. This helped me , because I was able to read a whole book and it’s not the end of the trimester yet so I still have lots of time to finish up my other book “Hugo”.

Blog Post #2

A couple of months ago I bought a snowmobile so my friends and I could go up north on a snowmobile on the trails. As we waited for the trails to open up and snow to come I constantly looked at the weather channel to see if it’s gonna be cold enough for snow and finally, a day came and we got snow. I was working out at my local gym when my friend asked me if I wanted to go ditch hopping with the sleds and I said of course. I wanted to see how my sled would do in the snow. So when I get home from working out I go out to the barn and start my sled up and put my winter clothes on. Once I was ready I hopped on my sled and I hit the throttle and I immediately feel the power of the sled. I hit a couple of ditches jumping through the air then I hit the ground and I feel the shock compress as they should and the sled was performing how I should. Then as I kept driving my sled down the road to meet up with Brady my friend my sled started to bog down and then it shuts off. My first reaction was I ran out of gas and then I saw I had plenty of gas so I tried to start it again and that didn’t work so I called Brady and he asked me if the spark plug boots on all the way and sure enough one of them fell off when I was jumping ditch on the way there. It was a sigh of relief because I thought I just bought a sled that blew up and wasted a bunch of money on the sled.

Revise/Edit:

This was a piece of writing that I had written at the beginning of the trimester and didn’t have a whole lot there so the first thing I did was delete a lot of stuff that I didn’t like and then I put some longer most interesting this so the story had something there. I try to make it feel as if you were riding the snowmobile like when I said “I hit a couple of ditches jumping through the air then I hit the ground and I feel the shock compress as they should”. I wanted it to make it feel you were on the sled and you could picture and feel the shock compress. I also had to fix some small spelling mistakes.

Words From The Author:

I wanted the audience to feel like it was their sled and they had their hands on the handlebars hitting the throttle. So I tried to put a picture and the feeling in their head of how it feels to ride a snowmobile. I tried to kept the detail small but juicy because I only have a small amount of time to write this for the audience. so I tried to make it a good understanding of what snowmobiles are like when riding them.

As a senior at Mount Pleasant high school, it’s crazy to think that I’m going to graduate in 6 to 7 weeks. All that time, effort and hard work that my and I have put in for twelve years at school will abruptly come to an end. But, actually, when you think about it, we will be putting all of our twelve years of knowledge that we have learned from all of our teachers, parents, friends, and places we have worked at to the test. The only thing that will be coming to an end is a daily routine of 12 years which is: waking up, going to school, and seeing the same faces you see every day.

The test I am talking about isn’t a test that your teachers give you about every week – it’s a  test of all the knowledge that we have learned over 12 years. Maybe for some of my classmates, this test is going to college or maybe that will be finding a job that you like and sticking to that for the rest of your life. For me, I have been looking at going to college to be a welder. I have had experience both in school and at work welding and it’s something that I find that I like the most out of all things I have done so far in my life. So really we all are going to be on to the next chapter of our life and this isn’t gonna be a new chapter as a kid, no it is gonna be as a young adult, and we will be putting our knowledge and everything else to the test.

In other words, we will be “adulting.” I am gonna have to grow up quickly because the real world is only 6-7 weeks away and then I’m on my own. I chose a book called Alone Together and this book was about a young girl named Sadie Carter who has a lot of siblings and what goes on in her life. Her mother works a full-time job at a church and her dad did until he lost his job delivering packages. Her father then became depressed and didn’t work after that. Without a job, it was very hard for her family because they only had one income for a big family and that was from her mother. So Sadie had to do what she needed to do and that was getting a job so she could support herself.

You would think that in this book that Sadie’s father would buckle down and find another job so he could support his family better. But he doesn’t. Instead, he sits back and watches his family drown. He couldn’t care less about them; he only cared about himself. Soon Sadie shares how she struggles in life but she buckles down and gets a job because she wants to reach all of her dreams.

As a 12th grader at MPHS, you would think that you would look up to those who are older, all those adults who have been through everything that I am about to go through after I graduate. You see it’s in this book you don’t wanna be like Sadie’s dad you wanna be more like Sadie. Yeah, Sadie struggled, and she messed up but she got back on the horse and kept going. I have learned from this book that “adulting” is about looking up to those who have done well for themselves; strive to be like those who get hit with a low blow and get back up on their horse and keep going, and lastly be a bigger person. In the book, Sadie got a job to support herself and was a bigger person and got a job at a restaurant while her dad sat back and did nothing. So after high school as a young adult whether I got to college or if I just end up working I will try to be those things so I can better myself as a person and a young adult.

Dilan Roestel is currently enrolled as a senior at Mount Pleasant high school. When done with high school he plans on attending college out of state somewhere for welding for 9months to a year. He plans to continue working as a welder out of state for a couple of years on the pipeline, then he would like to come back to Michigan and open his own welding shop for any people who need a repair on their equipment.

Reading Survey

My literacy journey has been a long one because I haven’t always enjoyed reading and writing but I have got used to a lot of things because of all of my teacher and English classes I’ve done over the years. I have written lots of essays over the years for school. Over my high school career and I’ve just learned to just buckle down and try to keep focused on what I’m doing so I can get my work done. Some of the teachers that have helped me with my writing are my 6th-grade teacher and my English teacher I have now they have helped me improve tremendously. I think I’ve improved a lot just because of those two people because they made me write a lot. They have made me write a lot so it made me think and work harder because I had to write a lot more. I have gone from writing small paragraphs to being able to write complete essays in one class period. I would have to say that my roots have grown deep into the soil when it comes to reading and writing. I’ve come a long way from where I was. I still do not like reading and writing and I still do struggle with it and I am not the best at it but I still just buckle down and just keep on going. There is plenty for me to still improve on and I am gonna work on those things before I graduate and after I graduate so that I am ready for after high school. I don’t want to be one who isn’t prepared. So If my boss tells me to write something up for him I will be ready and I will be over prepared for the real world things.

Reading Survey

I don’t read that much unless I am on my phone texting someone. I read on my phone when I am texting people and in school when I am doing work, but recently i have been starting to read the book Hugo and I am almost done with that. I would describe my reading as week I am dyslexia so i get a lot of things mixed up when it comes to reading. What keeps my reading alive? Probably my phone when I text a lot of people on my phone every day. I force myself to read a book when i am not doing anything to try and better myself. In a reading relationship I am looking for something small and short to read because i’m not a good reader. What pushes me away? Probably coming to school and getting a bunch of work and having time to read a lot. Who I am as a reader? I am not a good reader I will ready a little as possible if I can. Challenges as a reader? Challenges are reading long paragraphs. What topics I like? I like argumentative topics. As a reader I have learned that I suck at reading. Topics that pull me into a topic is people telling stories. What you read can impact you your writing because you can learn things by reading and then write about it. I plan on reading no books because I hate reading books. To read a book, get better at reading, and to learn more. Pay attention in class.

Writing survey

My current writing if only texting on my phone, classes that i am taking at school right now and at work. The ways that I write non school related are completely different to the ways I write in school I shorten my sentences when I am writing on my phone that way I don’t have to type as much and it’s a lot faster, but when I am writing in school I use complete sentences. What keeps my writing alive is trying to make my writing competitive. I am looking for a competitive writing when I write at school it makes it easier for me to write. Texting on my phone keeps my writing alive also . I’m not that good as a writing because I have a hard time thinking about topics that I want to write about bc I dont like writing that much. I have a hard time taking a small topic and writing long paragraphs. I am bad at writing and trying to make it  a decent story. Being able to lengthen my writing is the hardest thing for me because i have a hard time coming up with topics on right off the top of my head. the topics that I like to write about is telling stories of mine and writing argumentatively. I have passions with writing my stories and argumentative stories of mine. What pulls me in? Wanting to tell a story of mine. No I don’t like writing for real audiences. I don’t like telling stories about things about myself that I don’t like people knowing. Write better in complete sentences, write longer, and tell stories better are some things I need to work on to make myself better.

I chose the goal I did because that’s where I really struggled the most when it came to reading and the only way I could get better was to go at the biggest thing I was bad at and try to better myself at those things. It did take me a while to meet my goals but feel like I have completed my goals. Taking a look back at what I wanted to do better as a reader I wanted to be able to sit for longer periods of time so I could get in some good reading. I am a person who can’t sit still that much, but I have been able to sit for longer periods of time in class reading my book and I have been reading on my own at home and I have been able to get some good reading done here at home also. I also had a goal of finishing 3 full books before the trimester was over and I would say I am doing pretty good at that because I gave myself another challenge of picking up a bigger book so it has taken me a long time to get through it but I am almost done with it and I would say that would be about my 3 books because the book is so big. I also had a goal of not starting and stopping a book and I have been doing really good at that. I have been staying consistent with the book I am reading right now.

The one goal that stands out to me with a lot of growth is being able to sit still for a longer period of time. Before I couldn’t keep reading because every time I had the slightest noise or when someone walked by me I would have to head up from my book to see what was going on but now I have been getting better by blocking out those distractions and being able to read my book.

I put the most effort into reading at home. Let’s face it there are a lot of things going on in this world that set people back from their goals like working, family, and going out with friends. As for mine, I wanted to be able to finish 3 books before the trimester ended. I pushed out a lot of those distractions to come very very close to finishing one book that is like 3 times the size of the books that I normally read. So that’s why I would count the one book I am reading as 3 in my opinion.

what intellectual risk seemed to have the richest reward? I would say the biggest risk I took was being able to finish the book I chose before the trimester was over knowing how busy I get with things. But I buckled down and I got to the tail end of the book and I will finish that book within the next few days which I would say was good enough for me. I shifted my approach at this goal because it was the most challenging one, so I had to push through a lot of those distractions and get through my reading. Since I have played sports pretty much my whole life I am a very competitive person and I wanted to give myself the biggest challenge I could give myself and I say I did that.

Why do you believe you are adding to your overall literacy repertoire? I believe that I am adding to my overall literacy repertoire because I gave myself the goals that I needed to work on the most. The goals won’t just help me in school, these goals that I have completed are gonna help me throughout my working career. For example, one of my goals was being able to sit still and I have been able to better myself in that and that will help me at work in the future when it comes to getting a task from my boss I will have to be able to block out the distractions and sit still to focus on the task that is being given to me so that I don’t mess up when it comes to going the task that my boss has to give me. That’s why I believe I am adding to my literacy repertoire because I gave myself goals that would better myself as a reader and for the future of my career.

This school year I have been reading the book, Hugo. last trimester I had read 336 pages out of the book. It is a big book and I’m, not the fasted of readers I am also one who only really read in my spare time witch isn’t a whole lot. This trimester I read a little bit and now I am on page 459. I plan on finishing this book very soon, I am almost done with it.

Like I said last trimester I love this book because of all the pictures and you can see all the great detail in the pictures. I learned this trimester that you have to push through all the distractions. Blog post #6: Creative Writing

I would like to write about the time I shot my deer this year with my bow. It had been warm the past couple of days and deer don’t normally move that much when it is. My brother and I headed to Crystal to where my property is and we were late to the stand and as I was walking in and I was climbing up my stand there was a baby deer staring at me right next to my ladder stand when I was climbing up my ladder stand. It didn’t run off because it had no idea what I was, it just stared at me. When I got halfway up the stand a small buck came running in chasing some does. A bigger buck heard the smaller buck chasing the does so it came up to the buck to closer to me and once it came into range I pulled back my bow as my heart was pounding and waited for the deer to stop and once it did I pulled the trigger on my release and I watch the arrow fly to the spot where I was aiming and made a loud whacking and thump sound as the arrow went through the deer with ease and then into a tree behind the deer. The deer immediately jumped up in the air and kicked which normally means you put a good shot on the deer. I got down once all deer had cleared out to go check my arrow and sure enough, there was blood right where I shot the deer. So my brother and I tracked down my dear by looking at the huge piles of blood and sure enough, we found my deer laying in a cornfield.

Revise/Edit:

I started off with a rough draft writing my story very quick since I didn’t have a whole lot of time in class to write but when I worked on it I went back to change a lot of the words so the audience would know even I heard and saw. I wanted the audience to feel like they could close their eyes and kind of picture what I was hearing and seeing when I was going through the moment of me shooting my deer. For example, I use the words thumb and whacking so the audience would know what I hear when my arrow kit the deer.

Words From The Author:

Like I said before I didn’t have a whole lot of time writing this story when I was in class so I wanted to give a small but detailed summary of what happened when I shot my dear. I tried to make it so the audience could picture and hear what I was feeling when I shot my deer. I wanted to make the audience feel like they were in my shoes sitting in a tree stand watching deer come in then pulling back ut bow while your heart is racing. In the short period of time, I have to write this I tried to make it as real as I could.

I expanded my growth in recording my voice. I have never done anything like that so it was hard for me to get out of my comfort zone and record my voice so. It also helped me slow down and read a lot slower and more fluently so I wasn’t rushing through my reading.  It helps me play through my recording to hear if there was any mess ups that i could fix or if there is anything in my writing i wnna change because it didn’t sound right.”Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes”.

Using a video editor like WeVideo helped me also get better at creating videos so if i wanted to ater down the road I could mke videos. It helped me get use to the website and now if i ever wanted to edit a video or make a video for something i could use thr website and already be use to using it.”Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies”.

Thinking like a writer. Doing this made me think like a writer. It made me wanna think about storys that I have never told anyone and tell. It made me expanded those stories longer to create a better story for the audience. I also replaced smaller boring words with bigger and better words when i was writting my story. “Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics)”.
