Blog post #3

The total number of pages that I have read this marking period is 336. I probably read about 30 or more pages since my book doesn’t have a lot of writing in it. It’s usually because it makes me a better reader. I can’t read that long all at once because I get distracted easily so I will read for about 15-20 minutes. My reading has changed this marking period normally I can’t read for that long but I have gotten used to it.

I have been reading the book, Hugo, this marking period. What I love about this book is there is so many pictures it makes the stories about the character go by much faster in my head and then when there is reading parts in the book there is a couple of pages filled out. I like that because I don’t get distracted as much if I were to read a regular book with a bunch of reading. I can also remember pictures better than if I were to read a bunch.

I get most of my reading done here at home and I do most of that when I’m in my online English class. I don’t do any reading really when I’m in class at school because I take all the trade classes. I hope to finish the book I’m on right now and then start another book just like it. These books are pretty big so they take me a while to go through them. My goal is to get through this book and through a whole other one before the year is over.

I have learned that I am not very patient as a reader and I can’t sit very long when reading. Since I am not very patient as a ready I plan to read more and try to sit for long periods of time while reading to see if that helps me extend my reading goals so I can get through 2 books before the year is over.

The Time I Shot My Deer.

It had been warm the past couple of days and deer don’t normally move that much when it is. My brother and I headed to Crystal to where my property is and we were late to the stand and as I was walking in and I was climbing up my stand there was a baby deer staring at me when I was climbing up my ladder stand.

It didn’t run off, it just stared at me. When I got halfway up the stand a small buck came running in chasing some does. A bigger buck heard the smaller buck chasing the does so it came up to the buck to closer to me and once it came into range I pulled back my bow and waited for the deer to stop and once it did I pulled the trigger on my release and I watch the arrow fly to the spot where I was aiming and made a loud whacking and thump sound as the arrow went through the deer with ease and then into a tree.

The deer immediately jumped up in the air and kicked which normally means you put a good shot on the deer. I got down once all deer had cleared out to go check my arrow and sure enough, there was blood right where I shot the deer. So my brother and I tracked down my deal by looking at the huge piles of blood and sure enough, we found my deer.

Revision Decision

I did the normal editing like spelling punctuation but I also wanted to add some words in there so the readers would know what I was hearing when I shot the deer. For example, when I shot the deer I heard a big whacking and thump sound so I put what I heard into my writing. I thought those words would give the readers an idea of what I heard when I shot the deer so it would kind of put a sound in their mind of what it sounded like.

Words from the author

I chose this creative writing because I thought it was my best one and I love to hunt and tell stories of what happened and what I saw in the woods. You won’t know the trill of hunting until you do it. There have been times where I could have touched deer. There is nothing more exciting than being able to get close enough to a deer without them being able to see you then pulling your bow back and shooting the deer that you have worked so hard for to get because sometimes it could take years to shoot your ideal buck. So that’s why I chose to use this story because in my opinion there is nothing more exciting than being able to see all the deer up close than be able to shoot a deer that you have worked so hard for.

My literacy journey

Literacy Journey

My literacy journey has been a long one because I haven’t always enjoyed reading and writing but I have got used to a lot of things because of all of my teacher and English classes I’ve done over the years. I have written thousands of essays I’d say over my high school career and I’ve just learned to just buckle down and try to keep focused on what I’m doing so I can get my work done. Some of the teachers that have helped me with my writing are my 6th-grade teacher and my English teacher I have now. I think I’ve improved a lot just because of those two people because they made me write a lot. They have made me write a lot so it made me think and work harder because I had to write a lot more. I have gone from writing small paragraphs to being able to write complete essays in one class period. I would have to say that my roots have grown deep into the soil when it comes to reading and writing. I’ve come a long way from where I was. I still do not like reading and writing and I still do struggle with it and I am not the best at it but I still just buckle down and just keep on going.

Reading Survey

I have had a lot of experiences in and out of school. Some experiences I have had in school would be an English class you have to read a lot in order to do your work. Sometimes we have to read a book and then write about it. My current reading life is all on my phone. I read books sometimes on my phone and I read articles on my phone all the time. The ways I read are on my phone and I read books at school. Reading on your phone and reading a book is the same thing you just reading off a device instead of a book. I am a more on and off again reader. I get caught up and get busy and sometimes don’t have time to read a book. The only thing that keeps my reading alive is the stuff I am interested in knowing about or learning about.  I am a slow reader. I don’t read books fast, it can take me a while because I get busy sometimes so it can take me a long time to get through things. Things that hold me back when I am reading is I am a slow reader and I won’t read things if I’m not interested in them. I have had a hard time finishing books because sometimes I lose interest in them. I don’t have a favorite author but I like comics that are about the only thing that I will read because it interests me. I learn the best by reading off my phone. Things that pull me into reading are the new topics that I haven’t heard about and want to learn about them. Reading can make you think differently about the things you just read about. That’s why it might make you write different things.

Things that shaped me as a writer was writing essays in the classes I took and texting people on my phone. The only writing I do as of right now is on my phone and in English class. I do a lot of writing about books and that’s what we do in school. My relationship is on and off again with writing. I don’t do a whole lot other than in my classes and on my phone. Writing on my phone is the only thing that keeps my writing alive. I am a writer who doesn’t write all that much unless I have to. It takes me a long time to write and I am not that good of a reader so it takes me some time to reflect on my writing to fix it. The Challenge I struggle with is being able to keep my writing moving on instead of talking about the same thing. I like writing about the books I have read. I learned the best writing through school and on my phone. Things that pull me into writing is wanting to tell me about the things I have done. Your writing can influence what you want to read.

Goals

As a reader and writer, I want to move forward in reading more books before the trimester ends. I would like to be able to finish three full books before I am done with this class this trimester. I would like to finish three full books without stopping and starting them again. I need to stop putting books down and then picking them up again. I would say that my worst habit. As a writer, I would like to be able to write a whole page without stopping and starting. I wrote creatively in my English class last trimester towards the end. I think that I could stretch my writings out more and go more into depth. I would not like to write for real audiences. I don’t really like to share my writings. I just like writing about my stories sometimes and maybe share it with one or two people. I have never considered any form of publication and I think I would ever be interested in that. I would like to be able to write non stop and stretch my writings out.  These are my goals from last year that I had set for myself I would like to achieve those same goals but do a lot better of a job at doing them.

My Literacy Journey

Roots

My literacy roots start back when I was a kid and my mom would read to me before I would go to bed. My roots have grown a lot deeper into the soil. Now that I am older and I look back I would have to say that school was a big factor to get me to where I am today. I took a lot of reading classes in middle school that helped me get to where I am today. Having a phone is a big factor too because I am constantly reading and writing on my phone everyday.

ELA 11A- Tri 2 Exam- Roestel

Final Exam Essay

The goals that I chose for myself to reach this trimester was to read more, write more often, and lengthen my writing. Every english class I think is just stupid and a waste of time, but Andy my teacher taught me how to suck it up and just give it a try for once. Now that I have had a whole trimester to reflect on what I have been doing in class I realize that yes it did suck at some points but it wasn’t bad. All the reading and writing that Andy made us do helped because it taught me how to keep with a book and finish it. Normally I just read a couple of pages and drop the book and then when it comes time to write about what we read in class I just put down a bunch of random bull shit. This trimester I finished a whole comic book and then when it came time to write about what we were reading, I knew what to write instead of putting a bunch of random shit down that didn’t make any sense. I told myself that I wanted to lengthen my writing because I didn’t like writing at all and would just short paragraphs in my other english classes. Before I said that the only writing that I did was on my phone. Now in Andy’s class I am doing creative writings everyday help because I didn’t write that much and at the beginning of the trimester I didn’t write that much during the creative writings, but towards the middle and end of the trimester I got use to writing I felt comfortable about writing and I just would write and tell a whole story were before I would be so tense and wouldn’t want to write so I would just write a couple of sentences. So did I meet these goals? I would most definitely say that before I would never read a book and now I am starting to read more books not just in school but out of school too. I definitely met my writing goals. I write almost every day now in Andy’s class and I’m not just writing small paragraphs I am writing a lot bigger paragraphs.

Hunting on halloween thats was my last blog post but I would say it’s my best one yet. Why do I think it’s my best one yet? Because I told a whole story of mine with out stopping becuase I thought it was to embaressing or it was stupid. I put all my stress and emotions aside and just wrote. That’s what I think I improved in the most was just putting all things aside and just writing. Before I wouldn’t write at all and if I did it would have been very short and sweet. This class has taught me to just let loose and do what I felt was right. So yes I think that hunting on halloween was my best blog post because I just let loose and told my whole story about me shooting a deer. That was the blog post that stood out the most to me because I wrote the most compared to all of the other blog posts that I had written in the past.

I think I put most of my efforts into my creative writings. The impact it had on me was huge in my opinion because I never wrote before and these showed me that it was ok to write in here and open up about things. It definitely taught me to proofread my writings  because before I would just write something and then turn it in. When I would get my writings back from my teacher Andy they would just be filled with comments saying that I had to fix this and that. So the next writings that I did I was trying to go through them and make sure that my stuff was right so my teacher didn’t have to do as much work. I also thought to myself that I wasn’t gonna have anyone to proofread my writings when I get older and out of school so I might just want to start doing them myself so I can just get used to it now.

Which intellectual risk seemed to have the richest reward?  I would have to say the reading that I was doing in class. I read two comic books and those help me a lot. When I read those books I had something to write about for my writings in class. How did it shift your approach? This shifted my approach about picking a book in school and out of school and reading it. It showed that books aren’t always bad and that it doesn’t hurt to pick one up once in a while and read it. Ever since I have been reading I have been able to lengthen my writing more so I have something to talk about, where before when we were doing writings about the books we read I would just drag on about something random because I didn’t know what I was talking about because I didn’t read any books that I was suppose to read.

What do I think I am adding to my overall literacy repertoire? I think I am adding way more reading and writing. I write every other day in english class and out of school I sometimes write too. I also have been reading more and more in and outside of school. At the beginning of the trimester I didn’t read or write for shit. If it wasn’t on my phone then I wouldn’t care. Now that it’s at the end of the trimester It has opened my eyes to read and write more and more and that it can help you. I didn’t realize how much information that books can have and that not all information comes off your phone. So yes I would most definitely say that I have added a whole ton more reading and writing to my literacy repertoire.

Hunting On Halloween

It was a warm halloween I just got out of school and hoped in my truck and race home. I go home to grab my bow and arrow and hunt for clothes and then hop in my truck and speed my way down to Crystal Lake which is about 35 minutes away. When I get there I check the wind so I can decide what hunting stand I want to sit in.  Once I get all of my clothes on and decide what stand I want to sit in, I get my bow out and start walking to my stand. Once I get to my stand I climb in and hook my harness to the tree. So I didn’t fall out by accident.

As i’m sitting there I see a couple of does pass by and then about 30 more minutes later I see a very small yearling’s for walking right towards me off the path, as I am looking at the doe I look up and see a very nice 8 point buck locked right on the doe that was coming right for me. And the small doe kept walking towards me the buck had his head down and was coming right for the doe which was coming right to me. The small doe stops and the buck keeps walking right towards me and as soon he gets behind a tree I stand up and turn my boddie so I can pull my bow back to shoot the deer, and for me being left handed and the deer coming to me being on my left hand side I had to turn. So as he kept coming closer and closer until about 15 yards he stopped and was eating some grass on the ground. I pulled my bow back and got on his shoulder and then I let the arrow fly hitting the mark that I aimed right for.

I hit the deer he turns right around were he came from and starts to grunt and his breath becomes heavier and heavier as my arrow lodges deep and deeper into his body and blood starts to flow into his lungs until he can’t breathe no more then he falls to the ground and lays there until his organs start to shut down and then he stops breathing.  I use a 2017 hoyt defiant bow pulling back 70 pounds with a full metal jacket arrow with a 100 grain 2 inch expandable blade. so as soon as the grim reaper arrow head his impact 3 2 inch blades open up. these blades are meant to break bone and and cut anything that gets in its way. so shooting a deer that at 15 yards can put a lot a damage on something. My arrow didn’t go all the way through the deer but go through on both sides. So as the deer kept running the kept logging the arrow deeper and deeper until everything shuts down in his boddie.

Words From The Author

Those who hunt would know the thrill you get when you go hunting because everything comes down to a split second and you have to make a split second decision or else you can mess u your whole hunt. But those who don’t hunt you should know the race your heart gets when your about to take an animals life. Your mind goes through so many things at once when your about to take another animals life, like am I going to make a good shot or, is this animals big enough, or should I let it go till next year. There was so many things going through my mind until I pulled my bow back and pulled the trigger. All that nerves emotion when away and turned to me being excited when I saw the placement of my arrow.

Revision Decision

A couple of things that I changed in my writing was the spelling and making the writing longer than what it was before. I tried to make all my writings longer because I don’t like writing so when I go back and look at things I see that I can make some adjustments by putting in better words or telling more about the story that I left out before.

(Growth Territories) – What is a Hero?

I grew a lot because I learned what a true meaning of a hero was. I grew a bigger mind set of what category a hero was in. Like i learn there there can be small hero and a big hero.

My growth of knowing what a hero was went from being small to big. When I was reading my book about batman you could tell he was a big hero because he would save not just one person but the whole city. That’s were i learned that there was big and small heroes.

Another thing i would say i grew in was learning there is no such thing as a bad hero. I got to thinking that you cant be bad hero because hero’s are people or things that help you and are good.

MPx Reading Analysis Survey

The book I read was Batman The Killing joke Total pages read this marking period was about 200. Pages per week average is about 50. Is this more than usual? If so, why?  If not, why not? Yes this is more than usual. This class made me read more. Estimate your growth in stamina. I would say i didn’t grow that much as a reader because the reading wasn’t all that hard. How long can you read at once?  I can read for about 10 to 15 minutes before my mind starts to get bored and want to do something else. Has this changed this marking period? No it didn’t change that’s normally how long i read.

Reading Selection

What did you read (genres, authors) this marking period? I read BATMAN THE KILLING JOKE THE DELUXE EDITION BY: Tim Sale.  What did you love? I love that it was a comic book and there are pictures just makes it fun to read and it’s a short book. It made it fun for me to read the book when the page isn’t all words. Its nice to take a couple of minutes and look at the pictures that someone created.

Reading Habits

Where and when do you get most of your reading done? Here at school in my english class. What is your goal for the total number of books you can read this trimester? Goal would be to read one more book this trimester. This school year? I would prolly would want to read 3 more books this year. It all depends on how much time I have. That’s why I limit myself to only reading 3 books.

Summary

What have you learned about yourself as a reader this marking period? I learned that I can read long and I can read a harder books then I thought I can and finish them. How do you plan to challenge yourself as a reader during the next marking period? I am gonna try and finish a bigger book this trimester. It is hard for me to read bigger books because I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. So that is why I don’t read a lot because I dont like picking up a book i can’t finish.

My Duramax Memory

My duramax memory. It was a warm summer day and my friend parker has a 2007 duramax truck with a ts6 tuner witch makes the truck go really fast. He asked brady and I if we wanted to go for a ride and I of course said yes I would love to. So brady and I get in parkers truck and went for a ride. The one thing remember is when parker goes on a back road and launches his truck going very fast. You could feel the power of the truck when you got punches you back into your seat and you couldn’t pick you head up from it. I love that truck because it’s fast and you can do truck things in to.

Words From The Author Dilan Roestel

When I was younger I always had a dream of having a nice truck. One truck that caught eye a lot and that I fell in love with was the 2005-2007 GMC Duramax truck. The reason why they caught my eye was just the way they looked and sounded and how fast they were. My dad was always a GMC/Chevy guy so that made me have a taste for those trucks because I knew they were good because my dad had one. That’s why when Parker asked me if I wanted to ride in his truck I got filled with joy because it was my dream truck.

Revision Decision

What I wanted to teach people here was always set your goals as high as you can and try to reach them. Even tho I can’t afford the truck that parkers has as of right now it gave me a taste of what it’s like to sit in one and be in one when its driving around. It just gave me the drive to keep reaching for my goal. So what I wanted people to do when they are reading this is to know that your goals don’t come easy and that you have to keep setting them high and keep reaching for them no matter what happens.
