Blog Post #4

This school year I have been reading the book, Hugo. Last trimester I had read 459 pages out of the book. It is a big book and I’m not the fastest of readers. I am also one who only really read in my spare time which isn’t a whole lot. This trimester I read a little bit and now I am on page 500. I plan on finishing this book very soon, I am almost done with it. I also read the book “Alone Together” in class and out of school and that was 240 pages so that took up some time of mine so i wasn’t able to read my regular book as much.

Like I said last trimester I love this book because of all the pictures and you can see all the great detail in the pictures. I also love how the book goes by quickly you would think it wouldn’t since it is a big book but you fly through it. You read a couple pages then flip through a bunch of detailed pictures that also tells the story for you that you don’t have to read as much and that’s why I pick up this book because reading isn’t my favorite subject in the world. I also really liked reading the book “Alone Together” because it wasn’t a book just crammed full of words and it was a shorter book so i flew through the book with ease and enjoyed it.

I get most of my reading done here at home, but when I am in English class I pick up a different book and try to read some of the comic books also. Other than at home and at school, I don’t do a whole lot of reading. My goal for the last trimester was to finish the book but then I started reading “Alone Together” in class. I still have that goal of finishing my book and I hope to meet that goal before the year is up.

I learned this trimester that you have to push through all the distractions. Normally if I had too many distractions I would just quit reading but I learned you need to push through those distractions and also try and set yourself up for success so try and pick a room or a place where there will be no distractions so it is a better place for you to read. This helped me a lot because I knew I would need to read my book and get it done for class so I buckled down and kept reading through the distractions and that’s when I learned you it’s better if you just sit in a place with the least distractions.

This trimester I have been reading the book, Alone together It is about Sadie Carter and he life growing up as kid. The author wanted us to know how hard it was for her to growing up and what struggles she had to overcome. This trimester I managed to read the whole book which was 240 pages. It was a smaller book and I’m not the fastest of readers but I did finish it. I am also one who only really reads in my spare time which isn’t a whole lot but I have lots of class time to read this book which was very helpful. This trimester I read this book because this is all I had time for. I plan on finishing my other book “Hugo” very soon, I am almost done with it.

what surprised me in this book because I could relate to some of the things that were going on with this character in the book. I also love how the book goes by quickly. The author Sarah J. Donovan wanted us to know was struggler her and her family had. Sadie Carter changed a lot in this book and she overcame things on her own. I noticed how much Sadie Carter grew as a person. I flew through this book since it was small and Also because I had a lot of class time to read . You read a couple pages and the pages are very short so the book was very easy and fun to read especially for me because reading isn’t my favorite subject.

This helped me , because I was able to read a whole book and it’s not the end of the trimester yet so I still have lots of time to finish up my other book “Hugo”.

A couple of months ago I bought a snowmobile so my friends and I could go up north on a snowmobile on the trails. As we waited for the trails to open up and snow to come I constantly looked at the weather channel to see if it’s gonna be cold enough for snow and finally, a day came and we got snow. I was working out at my local gym when my friend asked me if I wanted to go ditch hopping with the sleds and I said of course. I wanted to see how my sled would do in the snow. So when I get home from working out I go out to the barn and start my sled up and put my winter clothes on. Once I was ready I hopped on my sled and I hit the throttle and I immediately feel the power of the sled. I hit a couple of ditches jumping through the air then I hit the ground and I feel the shock compress as they should and the sled was performing how I should. Then as I kept driving my sled down the road to meet up with Brady my friend my sled started to bog down and then it shuts off. My first reaction was I ran out of gas and then I saw I had plenty of gas so I tried to start it again and that didn’t work so I called Brady and he asked me if the spark plug boots on all the way and sure enough one of them fell off when I was jumping ditch on the way there. It was a sigh of relief because I thought I just bought a sled that blew up and wasted a bunch of money on the sled.

Revise/Edit:

This was a piece of writing that I had written at the beginning of the trimester and didn’t have a whole lot there so the first thing I did was delete a lot of stuff that I didn’t like and then I put some longer most interesting this so the story had something there. I try to make it feel as if you were riding the snowmobile like when I said “I hit a couple of ditches jumping through the air then I hit the ground and I feel the shock compress as they should”. I wanted it to make it feel you were on the sled and you could picture and feel the shock compress. I also had to fix some small spelling mistakes.

Words From The Author:

I wanted the audience to feel like it was their sled and they had their hands on the handlebars hitting the throttle. So I tried to put a picture and the feeling in their head of how it feels to ride a snowmobile. I tried to kept the detail small but juicy because I only have a small amount of time to write this for the audience. so I tried to make it a good understanding of what snowmobiles are like when riding them.

As a senior at Mount Pleasant high school, it’s crazy to think that I’m going to graduate in 6 to 7 weeks. All that time, effort and hard work that my and I have put in for twelve years at school will abruptly come to an end. But, actually, when you think about it, we will be putting all of our twelve years of knowledge that we have learned from all of our teachers, parents, friends, and places we have worked at to the test. The only thing that will be coming to an end is a daily routine of 12 years which is: waking up, going to school, and seeing the same faces you see every day.

The test I am talking about isn’t a test that your teachers give you about every week – it’s a  test of all the knowledge that we have learned over 12 years. Maybe for some of my classmates, this test is going to college or maybe that will be finding a job that you like and sticking to that for the rest of your life. For me, I have been looking at going to college to be a welder. I have had experience both in school and at work welding and it’s something that I find that I like the most out of all things I have done so far in my life. So really we all are going to be on to the next chapter of our life and this isn’t gonna be a new chapter as a kid, no it is gonna be as a young adult, and we will be putting our knowledge and everything else to the test.

In other words, we will be “adulting.” I am gonna have to grow up quickly because the real world is only 6-7 weeks away and then I’m on my own. I chose a book called Alone Together and this book was about a young girl named Sadie Carter who has a lot of siblings and what goes on in her life. Her mother works a full-time job at a church and her dad did until he lost his job delivering packages. Her father then became depressed and didn’t work after that. Without a job, it was very hard for her family because they only had one income for a big family and that was from her mother. So Sadie had to do what she needed to do and that was getting a job so she could support herself.

You would think that in this book that Sadie’s father would buckle down and find another job so he could support his family better. But he doesn’t. Instead, he sits back and watches his family drown. He couldn’t care less about them; he only cared about himself. Soon Sadie shares how she struggles in life but she buckles down and gets a job because she wants to reach all of her dreams.

As a 12th grader at MPHS, you would think that you would look up to those who are older, all those adults who have been through everything that I am about to go through after I graduate. You see it’s in this book you don’t wanna be like Sadie’s dad you wanna be more like Sadie. Yeah, Sadie struggled, and she messed up but she got back on the horse and kept going. I have learned from this book that “adulting” is about looking up to those who have done well for themselves; strive to be like those who get hit with a low blow and get back up on their horse and keep going, and lastly be a bigger person. In the book, Sadie got a job to support herself and was a bigger person and got a job at a restaurant while her dad sat back and did nothing. So after high school as a young adult whether I got to college or if I just end up working I will try to be those things so I can better myself as a person and a young adult.

Dilan Roestel is currently enrolled as a senior at Mount Pleasant high school. When done with high school he plans on attending college out of state somewhere for welding for 9months to a year. He plans to continue working as a welder out of state for a couple of years on the pipeline, then he would like to come back to Michigan and open his own welding shop for any people who need a repair on their equipment.
